Back when my husband and I were dating, we were poor college students, but still very much in love. Of course, material possessions weren’t extremely important to me at the time, so it didn’t matter that he didn’t have money to buy an engagement ring for me. However, this was difficult for my husband to accept. He told me he loved me and he never wanted to lose me. I told him I felt the same way.
The next day I got home from work early and I saw one of those personalized rubber bracelets sitting on the kitchen table with a note underneath it. I walked over and picked it up. There was a note on the bracelet that said:
“I will marry you someday-This is my pre-engagement promise.”
I never thought that I would love one of those personalized rubber bracelets, but I picked that one up and never took it off until many years later when he actually did buy me a ring and we got married.
We recently celebrated our 10 year anniversary. I had forgotten all about the bracelet, but as he was toasting to me, he brought it out inside a shadow box with other pictures and memories. It was the best gift I’ve ever received.
